When Rodney Howard Browne (RHB) garnered Madison Square
Garden in New York City for a crusade, many claimed he was trying to 'make'
an earlier prophecy of his happen--that a Revival would come to the U.S.
There was so much furor over the internet over this on various lists,
that I decided to spend a little time gathering the reports from the Awakenings
list to get an idea of what was really happening there, especially in regards
to salvations. My comments at the time are in green, in between the quotes.

Anyway, here is the synopsis of the reports I gathered, for history's sake:

Subject:         [NETchurch]:  synopsis of reports from Awakenings/RHB Madison Square
Priority:        normal

First, a 'side note'--Richard Riss made a public appeal to David
Wilkerson on his "Awakenings" list. David Wilkerson refused to participate
in the Madison Square Garden RHB crusade, and this fact Richard Riss later
mentioned in his response to the e-mails sent to him over his first post
regarding David Wilkerson.

In the first post, after mentioning a Cindy Jacobs prophecy, Richard Riss
spoke directly to David Wilkerson ,beginning with "David
Wilkerson, don't you want to get in on the ground floor of this?" He then
continued  talking as though they have had a history together and
recounting specific events, and ended with:

We thank God that He used you to found Teen Challenge in the wake of
all of that, and that you have been faithful for so many years now in New
York, there at the Times Square Church.  So don't turn your back on what
God is doing now! (The manifestations that you don't particularly like
have not even been evident in the GNNY meetings, although, as a historian,
I see nothing wrong with the manifestations.  They have been evident
during some of the most powerful moves of God throughout history.) Its'
not too late to play a crucial role in what God is doing now at Good News
New York, but that opportunity will soon be gone.  In any case, we love
you, Dave.

He was rebuked by someone in this matter!:

Richard, I was one who received you and your wives emails concerning
New York........Naturally as members of the Body of Christ we are
happy to receive news of any place that God is blessing people.

I must tell you Richard and Kathryn how sad it made me to hear you
speak the words, "David Wilkerson, don't you wish to get in on the
ground floor?". Richard, David Wilkerson IS the ground floor.  Do you not
know of the tremendous work that has been done in intercession over and
within that city?  the thousands of hours that people have interceded for
that place? The sacrifices? Oh my God, I can only believe that you are
young and therefore youth and being as yet untaught has led you to such
brash and haughty words.  The Spirit of Pride is a killer............get
rid of it.  Don't mistake a great rush of fun power for the Glory.  And I
caution you to be sober and vigilant, this is not a show.  I ask for the
Holy Spirit to help you to see my heart here.  I ask for forgiveness for
you both and for others like you. I know this will disturb you and will
anger your flesh.  But since I have only said with words a fraction of
what you need to know, I ask you to pray for wisdom....be humble and just
ask Him if there is truth you need to hear.

Apologize to your brother and to the brethren of the City of New York, do
it as publicly as you sought to deminish them. I will give you a hint here
and its for FREE!  Rodney Howard Brown, Cindy Jacobs, Rick joyner and who
ever else you may hold in high esteem, could never have gotten their foot
in the door of New York City had the sky of brass not been opened with the
blood, sweat and tears of many saints for whom it would be a high
privilege for you to be allowed to wash their feet, David Wilkerson is one
of them.

Alexis, thanks for your note.  I shall consider what you have written very
carefully, and I will ask the Lord to show me the spirit of pride that
must be in my heart.  I will (and do) ask that He will, by His grace, show
me the sin in me that you see in me, but which I do not as yet fully see,
and that He would then remove it from me, and grant me the grace to act
accordingly.

Thanks for your warning about not confusing rushes of power with His
glory. Personally, I haven't experienced anything of that kind, at
least not for about twenty-two years, so no, I do not identify such
things with God's glory.

As you may know already, my wife Kathryn and I have been praying and
interceding fervently for New York City for twenty-one and a half
years, and we feel that a big part of the answer to those prayers is
David Wilkerson and the Time Square Church.  We feel that another big part
of the answer to those prayers is Good News New York.  We were very
saddened when Dave decided not to support it or become involved in any
way, because his involvement could make such a big difference for the many
lost souls in New York.  We are praying that the Lord will change his
heart before this opportunity is lost.

To clarify--in my message to the awakening list, I was speaking of the
"ground floor" of what Cindy Jacobs was prophesying about, which she said
would begin when Claudio Freidzon spoke at Madison Square Garden.
Most people are aware that David Wilkerson was in on the ground floor of
what happened earlier (and in fact I provided the details of all that in
the e-mail to which you were responding).

If Dave could get behind Good News New York, it would mean so very
much for so many lost souls in New York City.  Please pray with me
that God would soften his heart before this opportunity is lost, even as I
pray that God would indeed help me to see my own sin more clearly.
Thanks!

Richard

There were nice testimonies of who said what and which
speakers were there as they (Richard and Kathryn Riss) witnessed to
the events at RHB crusade. The speakers mentioned included Meadowlark
Lemon, (basketball player from the Harlem Globetrotters), Claudio Freidzon
(person whom C. Jacobs prophesied over, as reported by Riss),  David
Sumrall of the "22,000-member church, Cathedral of Praise in Manilla
Philippines"

Some mention of one of the sermons RHB gave, no mention of Shelton as in
the other report. As for dates and crowds, I'll put them forward in
snipped down version for mostly just crowd and salvation reports:

-------
Richard Riss calls the "first meeting" below of the Good
News New York at Madison Square Garden, as being Wednesday, July 7,
1999, according to him.

"Rodney remarked that we had a good crowd that night, especially in
view of the fact that there were power failures in many places, and
many of the trains were not running, and that some people were
"overheated," [or suffering from the effects of extremely hot
weather].

[I would estimate that Madison Square Garden was about 20% to 25%
full.  If the capacity is 20,000, then we probably had between 4,000
and 5,000 people on the first night.]
---------
It was after this and before the Thurs. meeting, that Riss gave his
'appeal' to Wilkerson on the list and was rebuked.

AND THEN:

Claudio Freidzon was guest speaker Thursday, July 15,
with a report of "It looked to me as though about 2,500 people
responded to the altar call, out of a crowd that I would
conservatively estimate to be about 14,000 people". It was also said that
"Rodney said that as of 6:00 pm yesterday, 9,888 people had come to the
Lord through street witnessing since the beginning of the crusade."

Good New, New York!

Well, praise the Lord!  In the past few nights, I've seen over 1,000
people run to the altar to give their lives to Jesus Christ at Madison
Square Garden!  Thanks to the prayers of many, God has captured the Garden
for His Kingdom and spread a BIG net over New York City!  And 7,000 others
were saved through street evangelism before the doors even opened.

(Snip)
Friday night almost 1/3 of the audience came forward to receive
Christ or rededicate their lives to Him!

(note: this was again with Claudio as speaker)
---------
AND THEN, after more reports on various numbers cleaned from what RHB said
publicly,

Kathryn Riss comments:

...A great harvest is being reaped, but a MUCH GREATER harvest could be
reaped if the influential leaders of New York's greatest churches would
lend their aid.  We could see thousands rather than hundreds won for the
Lord Jesus Christ each night, if Madison Square Garden were filled with
Christians bringing their unsaved and backslidden friends and family to
hear the Gospel. ------- THERE WAS ALSO THIS ONE:

***Hi Richard:  I tried to get the number of converts from last
night's meeting from the GNNY staff, but they haven't gotten back to
me yet.  It looked like about the same number as most other nights,
around 300.  Tell the people who are concerned about it that I should be
getting exact numbers from the GNNY staff from now on. Also, they can get
more info from the GNNY website:  http://www.gnny.com/ (snip) (this does
not include the street evangelism numbers)

Thursday, July 22, 1999

God's grace descended at the Garden last night as Rodney
Howard-Browne pounded away at hell's gates with words of faith and
forgiveness.  The African evangelist asked the 3,000 person crowd to
stand, join hands, and bless those who have opposed this
soul-winning crusade.  "We're standing here despite great opposition
from our brothers.  I want to bless all of our enemies tonight, and
I want to pray," Brother Rodney declared to resounding cheers.
Affirming God's call to preach the Gospel at the Garden despite
small attendance and little response from the 34,000 churches
invited to participate, Howard-Browne declared, "there is a
battering ram effect taking place.  You watch - you watch what God
is going to do over the next few weeks!"
"People said we'd never get the Garden - we did! They said we'd
never pay for it - we have! They said we'd never go a week - we did!
They said we'd never make three weeks - here we are!"
"Already, 16,408 souls have been won to the Lord Jesus Christ in
this crusade.  And those are just the ones we have decision cards
for!  There are people telling me they are praying with so many
people that they can't fill out the cards."

Howard-Browne's stance was affirmed by guest speaker Reinhard
Bonnke, who said, "the Spirit of God showed me this auditorium will
be too small, and it will happen during this crusade!" Bonnke's own
first mass evangelism crusade, in Botswana Africa in 1974, began
with an attendance of only 100 but grew to pack the stadium with
over 10,000 people, according to church historian H.V. Synan.

(snip)

By Sat, Jul 24, 1999, they were still reporting poor attendance but
that  "17,182 souls have already been saved through Good News New
York, Rodney announced."

******
So ends the synopsis thus far, focusing on attendence,
number saved (according to RHB and the decision cards, apparently)
and the interesting little side comments about David Wilkerson and
perhaps other large churches who are not at all taking part.

Billy Graham had the ability to garner unprecedented unity
during crusades. If I remember correctly on the documentary I watched one
time, this was due in part to his decisions re: not being like the other
evangelists, who at the time made it a practice to lash out at everyone. I
wish I could remember more, but can't now. Anyway makes one wonder how
their lack of support came about? I mean, one could chalk it all up to
satan but maybe it has to do with who knows? Definitely different to have
such opposition to an evangelist.

Seems however the streets of NY has certainly benefited from the
2,000 or so probably unpaid volunteers who have canvased the area and have
reported such HUGE numbers for salvation. 300 a night doesn't equal over
17,000 souls, so there's some kind of revival going on and RHB is taking a
small part in the actual gleaning of souls thus far? I don't mean to be
disparaging, since he organized it (!!), just that on numbers related to
types of activity--preaching from stage vs. street one on one,  this seems
to be the case thus far!
